Anyone volunteering at Longcraig needs to join the Longcraig Acitve Support Unit (ASU). Joining the ASU gives you membership of the Scout Association and entitles you to the benefits that infers, such as access to various training modules and 3rd party liability insurance cover. As with any organisation that works with children there are some checks that need to be carried out. Joining the ASU enables us to request a CRB check which ensures you are a suitable person to be involved in the centers activities. Don't worry, this is a pretty standard check which many of us also need for various roles such as work, church, school etc. Unfortunately each new role requires a new check. Its a pass or fail result and none of your personal information or background is disclosed to anyone at Longcraig.
The process is simple, one of our Admin team will help you fill in the official form and check you are who you say you are by confirming your identity. We then send this of to the Scout Association and in a few week you will get a certificate with a number.
To complete your membership you need to undertake a short on-line training module. Module 1 Essential Information is a mandatory module for nearly all adults in Scouting. It provides the basic information required for individuals getting started in adult roles in Scouting, vital to ensuring that all young people can enjoy safe Scouting.
Topics covered:
The Fundamentals of Scouting
Structure and support
Safety in Scouting
Safeguarding- child protection
Safeguarding- anti-bullying
The module takes about 30 minutes to complete. Once completed download the certificate and send a copy to permit@longcraig.info so it can be added to your record.
All staff at water activity staff at Longcraig need to hold a current Adventurous Activity permit in the activity that they lead. The process of applying for a permit is relatively straight forward. You can start an application for a permit from the within the Scout Membership system. See Permit
For your logged experience, refer to your RYA/BCU or other log book and send a few scanned pages or alternatively a list of your recent activity by filling in an LSC logbook.
Completed forms and log book or scans of your certificates and logs can be uploaded to ensure your application is progressed as quickly as possible.
When selecting an Assessor please try to use someone from Longcraig, speak to Ben if you need to know who that would be.
Before your permit is issued you will probably be required to go on the water with a "buddy" one of our existing water team and have a chat about your experience with one of our assessors. This is a very informal process and is just about getting you familiar with how we operate and allowing us to get to know you better.
While your application is being processed, there is no reason not to volunteer for a few duty slots. See the Rota for details. If you can volunteer to fill a slot, then email rota@longcraig.info with details of the dates and roles you want to do.
